Changing Mounted Network Drive Icon

Changing Mounted Network Drive Icon

I have a mounted network drive on my Mac Mini running Mountain Lion to a share on a Windows 7 box I use as a server in my house. I wanted to change the icon to something more descriptive, like perhaps a Windows drive icon or something similar.
I've read many of the instructions on this site and others about selecting the image, getting its info, copying the icon and pasting it on the info window of the drive, but that doesn't seem to work for mounted networked drives.
It works for any other drive, such as my Mac's main drive, but it doesn't work for the networked drive and appears almost corrupted. I've tried several different file types, including .icns, .png, .hqx, and several others all with the same result.
You can see what it looks like below. The icon and its preview reverts to an .hqx file icon and the icon in the info window looks corrupted. This happens for every file I've tried.
Am I doing something wrong or is there another file type or process I should follow?
Thanks for your help!
